Langley School celebrates golden anniversary

Solihull Editorial 15th Sep, 2024   0

CELEBRATIONS were in order as Langley School marked its 50th anniversary.

The Kineton Green Road school welcomed more than 500 past and present staff and pupils to an Open Event where the current Headteacher, Clare Thorpe, gave a speech alongside Year 11 pupil and head student, Aoife McNamara and a pupil from Year 7, Joseph Somers, who only started at the school four days prior.

Visitors were treated to the reading of a poem written by English teacher Graham Affleck to commemorate 50 years of Langley School as well as a trip down memory lane with a tour of the school and the chance to enjoy cake and coffee whilst looking through a back catalogue of Year Books and school photographs.

Along with previous headteachers and governors, MP for Solihull West and Shirley, Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, attended the event, and said he was ‘hugely impressed by the array of talent on display across the year groups’.

Langley School first opened its doors on September 4, 1974 and the headmistress Jenny McKoen and her staff welcomed just 240 pupils.

Since then the school has seen a huge increase in pupil numbers and has seen pupils travel the world and take part in a number of community events.

Clare said: “Like many of the schools in Solihull, Langley opened in 1974 and we are very proud of our ambitious, inclusive and fair approach to providing an enriching and engaging education for all.

“Every child matters and matters equally at Langley. It was a pleasure to welcome so many past pupils and staff back and we were delighted with the number of visitors who attended the event. It was a great celebration of the very best of our school.”
