THE LABOUR Party has announced Teresa Beddis to be its Meriden candidate at the general election.
Ms Beddis, who contested the Meriden ward at council elections this year, has lived in the village for over 20 years.
The former teacher is a policy adviser in the Labour party on its economy, business and trade commission.
She will be on the ballot on December 12 against the Conservative Saqib Bhatti, Green Stephen Caudwell and Liberal Democrat Laura McCarthy.
Teresa said: “It’s time we started putting people first. During the last nine years the Tories, with help from the Lib Dems, have cut our public services to the bone. We have millions living in poverty and there are people living on the streets in towns and cities throughout our country.
“We need an economy that works for everyone – not just the privileged few. This election isn’t just about Brexit – it is about what kind of society and world we want to live in.
“Our young people have demanded that their future and the future of our planet should be of the highest priority. I agree with them – we need to have the most comprehensive green policy underpinning our approach to everything.
“I believe that a vote for me as the Labour candidate is a vote for real change. It is a vote for someone who has spent most of their life serving their community.
It would be an absolute honour and great privilege to represent all the citizens of Meriden – young and old – as their MP. I undertake to be a hardworking, campaigning MP who will act tirelessly for Meriden.”
As well as the economy, Ms Beddis said her other policy interests are green issues and animal welfare.
Solihull and Meriden Labour Party said: “We are delighted to announce that the Labour candidate for Meriden is local resident Teresa Beddis.
“Teresa describes herself as a lifelong socialist, whose socialism is rooted in the belief that everyone is entitled to live in a fair and just society.”
“Meriden residents realistically have a choice of the two main parties at the election, as all the other parties lost their deposits in 2017 and in every parliamentary election only Labour has been able to challenge the Conservatives.”
