A Knowle woman has revealed the secret to a long life as she gets ready to celebrate her 100th birthday.
Irene Walker will be joined by family and friends on February 10 when she marks her special day.
The Birchmere Mews Care Home resident revealed her secret to a long life is a small glass of Baileys each night before bed.
Irene Grew up in Alum Rock Birmingham and attended Highfield Road School.
Her first job was in a biscuit factory and when she was 17 Irene was called up for service in the Second World War.
She said she was offered the role of milk monitor or to work the machines both of which she declined and became a bus clippie.
Irene says she remembers when an unexploded bomb was found in her street.
She said her mum told Irene and her brother to get into her bed before it went off – and when the bomb did go off at 5am the ceiling collapsed and she got upset that her new hat she wearing was covered in debris.
Irene married her husband Kenneth and had a daughter called Lynne.
She also has two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who are aged between six ad 21.
