Knitting needles at the ready for the innocent Big Knit and help older people in Solihull

WITH JUST over a month to go until the deadline, Age UK Solihull is calling on knitting ninjas to get stitching and craft as many little hats as possible.

Local knitters and crocheters in the borough have already made over 10,000 hats for the charity but it still has a way to go to reach their target of 15,000 hats by July 1.

The Big Knit campaign, in partnership with innocent drinks, raises money to provide vital information, advice and friendship for older people. Funds raised for Age UK Solihull will stay in Solihull help older residents of the borough through services like befriending, social clubs, digital skills training and the Solihull Winter Warmth Campaign.

Each little hat will be put on an innocent smoothie bottle, which will go on sale from October 2025 in selected UK retailers.

For every be-hatted smoothie sold, Age UK Solihull will receive 30p, helping to make a huge difference to the lives of local older people in the Solihull community.

To make it easier and even more fun to get involved, Age UK Solihull has launched a Big Knit Drop-In Group, held every Thursday from 1pm to 3pm at The Core, where residents can knit together, have a cuppa, and enjoy a friendly chat.

It’s free to attend and there is no need to book.

Hot drinks and patterns are provided – just bring wool and needles.

Or finished hats can be sent to Age UK Solihull at The Core, Homer Road, Solihull B91 3RG.

Rebecca Jacob, fundraising manager at Age UK Solihull, said: “We are so grateful to everybody who has been knitting for the Big Knit so far this year, and now the hat deadline is nearly upon us, we’re putting out a final call to the woolly warriors of Solihull to knit as many hats as possible.

“If we hit our target of 15,000 hats by July 1, we could receive a huge £4,500 from innocent drinks. We have already sent off over 10,000, but we still have a way to go. We are urging local people to harness their wool-power and knit as many hats as you can over the next few weeks to help us to reach our target.

“These little hats really do make a huge difference, and it’s thanks to fundraising initiatives like the Big Knit that we’re able to continue providing our vital services and helping older people in the local community.”
