Keeping hedgehogs cozy sees students scoop top award

CREATIVE hedgehog habitats made by students at Solihull College and University Centre have scooped a top prize.

Animal Welfare students have been handed the Hedgehog Friendly Campus award (HFC), a national award scheme designed to protect hedgehogs, enhance their habitat and create awareness, part funded by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and delivered by Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS).

The Level 3 Animal Management students at Blossomfield Campus took on the challenge to secure a bronze award, the highest accolade you can receive in year one.

Students were set a series of tasks including spreading the message across the College, identifying ways to make the grounds more accessible for wildlife, fundraising, and making nest boxes.

The College’s head of higher education and research, Claudine Barnes, said: “We found this a great way to let our learners lead the way when it comes to the College’s aim of being more sustainable and eco-friendly.

“They took part in litter picks and built bug houses to place around the grounds. We are delighted we have been awarded the top level for year one and will continue to work towards our silver award next year.”

It’s hoped hedgehog tunnels will be built in the new term so students can see how many of the endangered animals make the college grounds their home.
