A CHURCH choir in Solihull has created a song in tribute to key workers – via a Zoom meeting.

Choristers from St Alphege church in the parish of Solihull have been unable to rehearse together, but this led to them to virtually record a version of the Wizard of Oz number’Over the Rainbow.’

It was performed live to coincide with the nation’s ‘Clap for Carers’ at 8pm last night (April 16).

St Alphege director of music, Isabel Baumber, said: “To show support for all those key workers who put their lives on the line each day to overcome the terror of Covid-19, musicians are encouraged to perform the song ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’.

“The song seems particularly poignant as children around the country are displaying pictures of a rainbow in their windows and we feature some of those in the video.”

“The Choir of St Alphege Church, Solihull, has been meeting via the video-conferencing platform Zoom since the introduction of social distancing. We have been able to reconnect with choir members who have moved further away in recent years, including past members who now live in Madrid, the location of one of the worst Coronavirus outbreaks.

“Over the past few days, we have met to create a recording of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ as our tribute to all key workers. We have nurses and doctors who sing in the choir, and many parents of choir members are working in lead roles in local hospitals at the moment.

“We hope this video will show doctors, nurses and all key workers that the people of Solihull hold them in their thoughts and prayers and wish them hope and safety during this difficult time.”
