A MACMILLAN Cancer Support fundraiser has raised a record £22,459 from her annual quiz.
Joyce Rothschild has been running the quiz for the past 25 years, initially raising money for the Cancer Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital before switching to Macmillan 21 years ago.
She first started raising money through her annual quiz while recovering from chemotherapy for breast cancer and since then it’s drawn fans from across the UK and the world too.
“I had to have additional surgery because at that time there wasn’t access to a specific piece of equipment which would have enabled the surgeon to identify the level of spread without removing my lymph nodes.
“I wanted to make things easier for women who came after me, so raising money for this equipment seemed a good idea.”
Over the last 25 years, Joyce has raised more than £206,000 for charity, most of which has gone to Macmillan.
The quiz itself is distributed to over 2,000 people with entries received from around the world.
“I admire Macmillan’s work and not only the clinical support they provide but the emotional and practical support they provide for people living with cancer too,” said Joyce.
Jayna Kawa from Macmillan, said: “Public support is so vital. As a charity that is almost entirely funded by public donations, we are relying on people to do all they can to help us continue our work.
“That is why we are so grateful to Joyce, and her friend Yasmi Roberts and her husband Mark.”
Every year there is a different theme to the quiz. This year, the theme is ‘ways of getting about’.
There are cash prizes for the winner and runner up and all entries go into a draw to win Marks and Spencer vouchers.
To enter, a donation of at least £2 is suggested. The deadline for this year is January 7, 2022.
