Illegal tobacco seized from Olton shop

A STASH of illegal tobacco has been seized by Solihull Council and West Midlands Police at an Olton shop.

The Council’s Trading Standards team and Police organised a joint visit to the premises and confiscated around 1,000 non-duty paid cigarettes and a quantity of hand rolling tobacco after a test purchased proved the goods were illegal.

The team found the illegal goods hidden in a range of different places including a hollowed out fire extinguisher, a pair of speakers and inside the casing of a cash till system.

Councillor Karen Grinsell, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities and Partnerships, said: “This operation really emphasises the benefits that can be obtained from local organisations working in partnership with each other.

“Together, we have sent out a message that we will simply not tolerate illegal trade practices in Solihull. The practice of selling non duty paid cigarettes adversely effects legitimate local businesses and can often be just one aspect of further criminality.”

Anyone with information on the sale of illegal tobacco or alcohol should contact 03454 04 05 06.
