Hundreds call for Birmingham Airport to be renamed after Ozzy Osbourne

A PETITION has been launched to rename Birmingham Airport after the late Ozzy Osbourne.

The Black Sabbath frontman died on Tuesday (July 21) surrounded by his family and prompting heartfelt tributes from around the world.

Some superfans have also called for the heavy metal star to be memorialised through Birmingham Airport by renaming it to Ozzy Osbourne International.

Petition organiser Dan Hudson argued that the city’s airport should follow the example of John Lennon Airport in Liverpool.

Dan wrote: “Ozzy Osbourne is the most important musician ever to hail from Birmingham. He rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the pioneering rock band Black Sabbath, who invented the genre of heavy metal. Ozzy’s influence on music and culture is undeniable. Naming our international airport after him would be a fitting tribute to his extraordinary career and contributions to the arts.

“Other airports in the UK are named after their famous children (George Best International Airport in Belfast, John Lennon Airport in Liverpool) so it is only right that we do this here in Birmingham, in honour of Ozzy.

“Together, we can celebrate the legacy of Ozzy Osbourne and the incredible influence our city has had on the world stage, thanks to him.”

The petition has garnered more than 2,700 signatures in just over 24 hours.

On signing the petition, Jason said: “Ozzy is, was, and shall always be an inspiration to everyone worldwide.

“Renaming an airport is the last we can do to honor stuck a great and monumental individual that has touched countless lives and will continue to touch individuals long after he left this plane of existence.

“We love you ozzy.”

Richard said: “Ozzy and the band felt Birmingham was important enough to them that they finished both Black Sabbath’s final tour there in 2017 and then finished their careers there two weeks ago.

“They loved Birmingham and carried it with them everywhere they went. Now Birmingham can welcome the world through Ozzy, by naming the airport for him.”

Birmingham has also become a shrine to Ozzy with fans flocking to Black Sabbath Bridge on Broad Street to leave flowers and pay tribute.

Birmingham City Council also opened a book of condolence where fans could send messages to the Osbourne family,
