Heritage trail offers chance to journey back to 19th Century Solihull

A NEW heritage trail is offering a chance to take a journey back to early 19th Century Solihull.

The initiative was launched by Solihull councillors Alison Rolf and Joe Tildesley on Wednesday, August 7.

A leaflet provides an insight into the historical background of Solihull town centre and visitors can see it brought to life by two guided tours taking place on Saturday, August 10 at 10.30am and August 17 at 5.30pm.

Tracey Williams from Solihull’s Core Library will be leading the tours.

They are about one kilometre, along a fully pedestrianised circular walk that will take around one hour to one and a half hours.

The trail has thirteen points of interest beginning at the heart of the town centre in The Square where the High Street meets Church Hill Road.

The Heritage Trail leaflets, with more information displaying the full route, are available to collect in Solihull’s Core Library.

The council teamed up with Touchwood and Solihull Business Improvement District as part of the ‘A Postcard to Solihull’ event.

Shoppers and visitors can take a look at the two full High Street panoramas from 1948, which are on the wall of Touchwood shopping centre near the Manor Walk entrance – and show just how much Solihull has changed over time.

Solihull’s Cabinet Member for Stronger and Safer Communities Councillor Alison Rolf said: “The leaflet is a fantastic way of getting people to see the history of Solihull!

“Many thanks to Touchwood and Solihull BID for all their support in getting the new heritage trial leaflet printed.”

Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Sport Councillor Joe Tildesley said: “What a great way to attract people to the heart of Solihull and tell people about its wonderful history. I’m sure people will love reading the leaflet and taking part in the tours”

Chief executive Solihull BID Melanie Palmer said: “The Heritage Trail is a great addition to our ‘A Postcard to Solihull’ campaign in which we invite you to join us on an adventure down memory lane.

“We want to encourage visitors into the town centre and the new Trail Leaflet and the Postcard project gives an insight into the town’s rich history.”
