A HEARTLESS thief who duped an 91-year-old man and then stole from him has been jailed.
Scott Hibberts stole from the man after turning up at his home offering to do odd jobs including clearing up leaves and guttering.
The 28-year-old struck at the address in Sandfield Road, Shirley three times during a week in July.
On his final visit he stole cash and a bank card with which he went on to spend just over £100.
He was identified from CCTV in a nearby shop where he’d used the stolen card shortly after the burglary, and after the elderly man’s son reported the matter to police.
Hibberts, of no fixed address, was jailed for a total of three years and nine months for burglary and theft at Birmingham Crown Court.
Solihull Police said distraction burglars can adopt many guises: a police officer, rat catcher, council employee or workman to name but a few.
Hibberts’ victim was vulnerable due to his age and these tricksters can be very convincing.
On their facebook page Solihull Police said: “It’s vital people report offences or suspicious behaviour to us so that we can piece together a picture of offending patterns, potentially link offences and gather evidence.
“We’d urge anyone who has an elderly relative, neighbour or friend to pop round, check up on them, and ensure they are wary of the tactics employed by distraction burglars.
“Everyone can play their part – let’s spread the message and hopefully stop more people becoming victims.
“Our message is never let anyone into your home who turns up unannounced.
“If anyone says they’re on official business ask to see identification, check it carefully and phone the organisation they claim to be from.
“Get a number from the phone book or online – don’t use any number they provide on a card.
“If in doubt… keep them out is the mantra all residents should adopt.”
