VETERANS in Solihull were treated to a taste of Scotland as Royal Star & Garter home marked Burns Night.
With a bagpipe accompaniment, the traditional Scots evening featured a traditional Burns Supper – including haggis, neeps, tatties and a dram or two of whiskey – at the Tudor Coppice Home on January 24.
Entertainment was provided by bagpiper Stuart MacLaughlin and drummer Peter Tonks, while the meal also featured piping in the haggis and a recital of Burns’ famous Address to a Haggis.
Burns Night celebrates the birthday of Scottish poet Robert Burns, who was born on 25 January 1759.
Royal Star & Garter provides loving, compassionate care to veterans and their partners living with disability or dementia.
After the special lunch, residents in Solihull enjoyed hot toddies and other whiskey-based drinks, and took part in a tossing the caber competition, featuring large foam tubes.
The lunch coincided with resident Harry’s 95th birthday. He said: “It was a really nice day. God knows what they’ll do when I’m 100!”
Royal Star & Garter cares for residents from across Britain, and each year marks national events such as St David’s Day and St George’s Day.
The Home in Solihull also offers short break stays and a day care service.
