A GREYHOUND charity is hoping give its newest resident a winning smile for his ninth birthday.
Barney, a gentle eight-year-old greyhound, was handed over to Daybreaks Trust in Elmdon after a change in his owner’s circumstances.
When he arrived at the rehoming centre for former racing greyhounds staff said it was heartbreakingly clear that Barney had been suffering in silence as his mouth is in such poor condition.
It was only when a trained animal care staff member gave him a full health check, that the full condition of his mouth was realised.
They said he needs almost all of his teeth removed just to be able to eat without pain.
Daybreaks Trust said since arriving Barney has shown just how clever and resilient he is – as he has worked out how to splash water into his bowl to soften his dry food, making it easier to eat with his sore mouth.
However, in a bid to stop his struggle the charity has set out to raise just over £2,000 to save his smile in time for his birthday next month.
Due to the severity of Barney’s condition, he requires a specialist procedure with a high risk of jaw fracture, which makes it far more complex and costly.
Daybreaks Kennels manager, Luci Foulkes said “Barney is a friendly and affectionate boy. With Barney’s ninth birthday just around the corner in June, we’d love nothing more than to give Barney the gift of a pain-free smile and a fresh start. Any donation, big or small, will help us get him there.”
