Grantries installed on M42 congestion-busting upgrade

Solihull Editorial 10th Sep, 2023   0

THIS IS one of the first of several new gantries being installed on the congestion busting upgrade of the M42 junction six near Solihull.

Major upgrade work is currently taking place on the stretch of road near the National Exhibition Centre and Birmingham Airport to alleviate delays and provide drivers with smoother journeys while travelling on the M42 through the region.

National Highways, who is carrying out the works, says a total of 10 new gantries are being installed over the coming weeks between junctions five and six.

The two full span gantries to be installed each weigh up to 78 tons and stretch between 35 to 40 metres in length across the road.

A further seven cantilever gantries will also be installed each weighing up to 32 tons and stretching between 15 to 20 metres in length across the road.

The highways agency said to keep disruption to a minimum for drivers, the work is being delivered overnight while the road is quieter.

National Highways project director for the M42 junction six scheme, Leyton Rahman said: “The installation of these new gantries is a key milestone in the major upgrade work taking place on the M42 at junction six.

“We have planned this work methodically to take place overnight when the road is at its quietest to make sure we can limit disruption for drivers.”
