General Election 2024 - meet the Solihull West and Shirley candidates - Max McLoughlin

People are crying out for real change, and real hope.

We need an NHS that supports both the health of the people that work in it and the people they care for. The Green Party is pledging more money to the NHS than any other party and will stop the move towards more privatisation.

New housing developments need to come with the schools, libraries, GP surgeries that are needed. “Building” should mean the right homes, in the right place, at the right price. That means not just letting developers loose on the greenbelt but providing good quality homes for those that need them most.

We must insulate housing so that everyone spends less on having a warm home.

The runaway profits of energy companies are a symptom of both the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and how homes here leak heat in cold weather. Those that say, “we cannot afford to do this”, should know “we cannot afford NOT to do this”.

The climate and those living in fuel poverty need action on this now.

I believe the tired line of “there is no money” is being repeated by both Labour and the Conservatives isn’t true. The top one per cent have pocketed over £20trillion in new wealth, globally, since the pandemic.

In the UK the top one per cent hold as much wealth as the entire bottom 80 per cent of the population.

The ‘Cost-of-living Crisis’ is an inequality crisis. This is why we are proposing a small wealth tax on the super-rich, so that the tax system is fairer. Those with the broadest shoulders can and should pay their fair share.

In Solihull I am the only candidate who was born and lives in the constituency.

Three generations of my family live here, working in health, education and public service. I have been a Councillor since 2016 and am leader of the opposition on Solihull Council. This means I have seen first-hand the damage done to public services locally, but also the impact that cuts have had on the lives of so many people here. Solihull West and Shirley needs a representative that knows the area and the challenges people face here.

We have seen what happens when other parties parachute in a candidate without any connection to Solihull or Shirley. This election is about who will best hold the incoming Labour government to account in the interests of local people.

I feel proud to be standing in my home constituency of Solihull West and Shirley. This is where I was born, went to school, work and have my family. It is an honour to have been elected three times before by residents in Shirley South.

It will be a privilege to serve you as your MP and repair the damage previous governments have done to our country and constituency. That is why I ask that you don’t just send a message to the Conservatives and Labour that we need real hope and real change, but that you vote for me and send a representative that will champion that change.

The Observer did not hear back from Julian Knight, who is standing as an Independent candidate, or Mary Ann McKenna, who is standing for Reform UK, before our deadline.
