General Election 2024 - meet the Solihull West and Shirley candidates: Deirdre Fox

Solihull Editorial 14th Jun, 2024   0

I bring experience, capability and knowledge developed during my 26-year career in the steel industry with TATA. I worked in senior positions in the UK and abroad, with customers in automotive, construction and aerospace as well as with politicians and trade unions.

I have seen first-hand how important skills and high-quality jobs are to communities like Solihull West and Shirley. I have now moved on from that career, and have the time and energy to focus my attention on the constituency.

Married with two children now in their 20s, I have juggled work and family all my career and understand the challenges faced by so many of us who do this.

I am fully committed to using my skills and experience developed as a woman in industry to provide a clear voice for the residents.

Residents in Solihull West and Shirley are talking to me about the challenges of accessing GP appointments and health support.

Parents are struggling to get access to the schools they need, especially if they have a child with special needs, and we are all concerned about increasing levels of anti-social behaviour on our streets.

Labour has a fully-costed plan to address these priority areas: 40,000 more GP appointments each week and 6,500 more teachers recruited including those with specialist skills based in the classroom, where they’re needed.

Access to affordable housing presents big challenges locally for first time buyers and renters. This will be addressed through Labour’s new Freedom to Buy mortgage guarantee scheme.

Labour has a plan to recruit more community support officers and policemen to bring visible policing back to our streets and target youth services in areas of most need.

I will work tirelessly as part of a Labour government to start to rebuild the support services we all need and deserve.

Underpinning this is a need to rebuild our economy.

Labour’s plan to set up GB Energy will not only help to reduce household bills, but create quality skilled jobs as we prioritise our environmental commitments with our Green Prosperity Plan.

Working with business we will build an Industrial Strategy that delivers for us all in businesses large and small, and commercialises the first-class innovation capability we have in our universities and research centres.
