General Election 2024 - meet the candidates Meriden and Solihull East: Shesh Sheshabhatter

Solihull Editorial 23rd Jun, 2024   0

As your Green Party candidate, I offer a proven track record of dedicated service and a deep understanding of our constituency’s needs.

Having lived in our community for over 12 years and serving as your Green Councillor since 2021, I have consistently advocated for local concerns, tackled issues such as social housing and safer streets, and worked tirelessly to ensure accessibility for all residents.

Our Green pledges reflect my commitment to creating a fairer, greener, and safer society.

Protecting the NHS:

I will fight to safeguard our NHS, ensuring it remains publicly funded, free at the point of use, and able to provide high-quality care for everyone. We are committed to investing £28billion in the NHS to reduce waiting lists, increase staff pay, and ensure access to an NHS dentist.

Bringing Services into Public Ownership:

I will advocate for essential services such as water, energy, and public transport to be brought back into public ownership, ensuring they serve the public good rather than private profit.

Standing Up for Migrants and People Seeking Asylum:

I will stand firmly in support of migrants and those seeking asylum, advocating for fair and humane treatment and policies that respect human rights.

Action on the Climate Crisis:

I will push for immediate and decisive climate action, holding the next government accountable for its promises and ensuring sustainable practices are at the forefront of policy decisions. We aim to transition to a zero-carbon economy as soon as possible, significantly investing in wind and solar energy, and phasing out nuclear power. We will cancel recent fossil fuel licenses, stop all new fossil fuel extraction projects in the UK, and remove oil and gas subsidies.

Economic and Tax Reforms:

Our plan includes increasing the minimum wage to £15 an hour, with offsets for small businesses via reduced national insurance payments. Furthermore, we will increase Universal Credit by £40 a week and abolish the two-child benefit cap, lifting 250,000 children out of poverty.

Housing and Rent Controls:

Our goal is to provide 150,000 new social homes every year and end the ‘right to buy’ to keep social homes within communities permanently. Additionally, we will enforce rent controls to keep rents affordable and end no-fault evictions, ensuring tenants can feel secure in their homes.

Transport and Public Infrastructure:

We plan to invest an additional £19billion over five years to improve public transport, support railway electrification, and create new cycleways and footpaths.

Education and Youth Engagement:

Our commitment includes increasing school funding by £8billion, providing £2billion for a pay uplift for teachers, ending tuition fees for higher education students, and abolishing Ofsted. We will also introduce free school meals for all children and free breakfast clubs for primary school children.

Democracy and Governance:

We aim to replace the first-past-the-post voting system with proportional representation and reform the House of Lords into an elected chamber. We also plan to extend the voting age to 16.

Local Impact and Proven Track Record:

We all know that Conservative are expected to lose this election as per general election prediction, so there is no need to vote tactically. You can vote for the candidate who will best serve our new constituency with new direction and leadership. Only a Green MP from our constituency can keep the next government honest on their policies and ensure they do not backtrack.

These Green pledges are highly relevant to our new constituency, aiming to build cleaner, greener, fairer, and safer communities that serve everyone.

The Solihull Green group, as the main opposition in Solihull Council, has contributed significantly to pro-environment policies and has kept the Conservative-run council honest in its service to residents.
