Furloughed cabin crew member pounds Solihull streets as Special Constable

WEST Midlands Police has paid tribute to a Special Constable who dedicated almost 100 hours of his time last month to policing the streets of his hometown having been furloughed during lockdown.

Will Mott’s role as a cabin crew manager with British Airways has been put on hold during the CoVID-19 pandemic.

So the 24-year-old from Solihull has stepped up his community policing efforts with the Shirley Neighbourhood Police Team.

He was sworn-in as a Special Constable on July 15 − having fast-tracked his training − and was out on the beat the following day.

And for the rest of the month he clocked up a total of 99 hours supporting his “amazing” team on arrest warrants, drugs raids and community policing, the force said.

He said: “I signed up to join the Specials at the end of last year and when furlough came I guess I had the option of not doing a great deal or really stepping up my Specials volunteering. I opted for the latter.

“It’s been a great few weeks; I was actually happy my furlough was extended! The Shirley team are amazing and been really supportive.

“I quickly completed all the tasks I needed to achieve independent patrol status − which means I don’t have to be accompanied by a regular PC while on duty − and have helped on lots of operations.

“I made my first arrest. It was a shoplifter who was a very prolific offender in Shirley and a thorn in the side of retailers. He was jailed for several weeks.

“My future is still unclear given the turmoil in the travel sector. The last few weeks have really whetted my appetite for policing and I’m now hoping to eventually join the force as a regular police officer.”

Solihull Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Lee Wharmby, paid tribute to Will’s commitment and community spirit.

He said: “Will is a top bloke and what he’s done as a volunteer, performing front line duties for Solihull communities, has been fantastic.”
