Fun in the sun at Shirley Carnival

Sarah Mason 15th Jul, 2017   0

FUN IN in the sun was the order of the day as Shirley Carnival spread music and joy at the weekend.

Thousands of people descended upon Shirley Park and were entertained by Shirley Brass band, hook a duck, a Punch and Judy show, miniature train rides and fair stalls, while thrill seekers took the the fair rides and games for the Edwardian-themed afternoon.

Stuart Barnes’ dogs also managed to herd a group of ducks in and around an obstacle course.

Lion and carnival chairman Jeremy Lees said: “This year we introduced some new elements to the carnival and they certainly went down well with the crowds. The day went off fantastically and we were delighted that the sun shone all day – it really does make a difference to events such as this.”

The Lions are still counting up the money but Jeremy indicated the Carnival should raise around £6,000 which will be donated to a range of local charities.
