Free prostate cancer tests inspire funeral donations from grieving widow

Solihull Editorial 7th May, 2017   0

IT WAS days after the funeral of her husband Harold, who died from prostate cancer, that June Bishop spotted that free PSA tests which can help detect the disease, had just been carried out on over 250 at Spire Parkway Hospital.

She was so impressed by the hospital’s efforts to get men to ‘take the test’ that she decided to make a donation in support of any similar events at the hospital in the future.

“It is so important that men get themselves checked out – it could really save their lives,” she said.

“When I saw that Spire Parkway were offering free PSA tests and so many people were talking up the offer I thought it was something I would like to support.”

Her husband Harold, who for many years was Export Finance Director with Massey Ferguson, died of prostate cancer in March. At his funeral at the Robin Hood Crematorium, mourners made donations that June has now passed on to Prostate Cancer UK and the Marie Curie Hospice in Solihull.

“There were so many people at his funeral, it was a wonderful tribute to Harold. I was also moved by the amount of donations that were made in his honour and I just thought some of this should go to Spire Parkway for their efforts to encourage men to get tested,” said June.

Hospital Matron Pat Munday said: “This was a lovely gesture that was very much appreciated. We hope to use it to promote further PSA days here so that even more men can take advantage of the free tests.”
