SILHILLIANS can can receive a free leg health check from a vein clinic in the town next month.
Premier Veins at Broad Oaks Health Clinic on Warwick Road is offering free check-ups as part of World Thrombosis Day on October 13 to raise awareness of vein conditions such as phlebitis and varicose veins.
Donald Adam, consultant vascular surgeon, said: “Phlebitis, also known as superficial thrombophlebitis or superficial vein thrombosis, is an inflammation of veins near the surface of the skin, usually in the legs.
“Many people often put up with symptoms of phlebitis, which include changes to the colour and texture of the affected area, localised swelling in the legs and feet, warm, itchy skin and general pain and discomfort.
“The cause of phlebitis is uncertain but it is thought it could be associated with other health conditions including varicose veins.
“Varicose veins occur when the valves in your veins don’t function properly, causing blood to flow backwards and pool. This results in swollen, twisted veins that you can see on the surface of the skin. Sometimes they can cause pain, heaviness, and swelling in the legs which, if left untreated, can worsen over time, leading to further discomfort.”
