A CARE experienced young mum has landed her perfect role to balance work and life.
To mark National Inclusion Week, September 15 to 21, Solihull Council highlighted Taylor’s success in her new job – something that she didn’t think would be possible.
Taylor is one of the two care experienced young people working at Coffee at the Wood Café and Coffee Shop in Chelmsley Wood.
She had been out of work for some time before thinking about getting a job as her younger daughter was about to start nursery.
Her personal advisor, Rebecca Hess, referred Taylor to the Employment and Skills Team when this role came up and she has been working at the café since its opening in August.
Taylor said: “I love my job. Al is the best boss I’ve ever had. He is very understanding. He was happy to adjust my working hours so that it can fit my schedule better.
“Having this job helps getting me into a routine as my little girl has just started nursery.
“It keeps me busy and I can treat my daughters more now that I have an income! I hope that by sharing my story, I can help other children in care to have better chances in life.”
Rebecca has supported her for two years.
She said: “I am so proud of Taylor. She had experienced some real challenges in life, which required lots of resilience and perseverance. She now loves having a job and all the responsibility and variety this involves. Taylor has so much potential and we are delighted that this has been recognised by this wonderful employer.”
Café owner, Al Dunbar, said: “Taylor has been fantastic! She’s settled in her role really well. As a small business, it was great to have that support from the Employment and Skills Team.
“I just gave them the job description. They shortlisted candidates and arranged interview slots for me at their centre while I was building the counter and painting in the café to get it ready for opening.
“It just made my life so much easier. On the other hand, the work that the team is doing in the background with jobseekers is great. I was impressed with the candidates they referred. I wasn’t aware of any difference in Taylor and our other team member who had been in care. I’m really pleased with their performance.”
