Former rations worker celebrates 102nd birthday

Solihull Editorial 12th Apr, 2024   0

A WOMAN who known for her fair share of luck on the horses has celebrated her 102nd birthday.

Margaret spent her special day surrounded by her friends and family at Blossomfield Park in Solihull.

Born and raised in Shropshire, Margaret enjoyed an 80-year marriage to her cherished husband George, where they raised two daughters.

She enjoyed a career with the Ministry of Food where she started out in the rationing department before working her way up to community inspection.

Margaret loved to spend time at Stratford and Ludlow races and indulge her passion for horse racing – she was known to be very lucky with picking a winner.

Margaret was also a very talented knitter and crocheter and traditionally would always knit a blanket for a new baby arrival in the family – with four grandchildren and six Great grandchildren she was kept busy.

She also loved her garden, feeding the birds and built a hedgehog runner and feeder when she lived at home.

Now residing at Blossomfield Rose, Margaret spends her days enjoying the beautiful view from her room of the wildlife and countryside, completing a wordsearch or two and spending time with her friends and devoted family.

She was the very first resident at Blossomfield Rose when the care home opened its’ doors in October 2022, six months after celebrating her 100th birthday.

Margaret has forged a particulary special friendship with a fellow resident and you can often find Margaret and Maxine enjoying a game of scrabble together.

Due to Margaret’s fondness for the game and time spent with Maxine playing, a kind hearted and nurse Josie, baked the most spectacular scrabble cake for Margaret’s celebrations, ensuring the cake score made Margaret the winner on her special day.

Margaret said: “I’ve had such a lovely day and I feel lucky to be able to live in such a beautiful environment where everyone is so friendly.”
