FOOTBALL star Darius Vassell and his wife Amani are ‘over the moon’ after welcoming in the new year with the arrival of their first child.

The former England and Aston Villa striker and his wife welcomed their daughter into the world on New Year’s Day.

Persia Athena Vassell was born a healthy 6lb 13 ounces at Heartlands hospital, and the former England footballer is besotted.

“I was the first person to hold Persia and I fell in love with her instantly,” he said.

“I’ve been so excited to become a father, I’m just so proud and thankful to my wife for bringing her into the world.”

Amani went into labour at 8.30am on New Year’s Eve and described the moment her waters broke as a ‘massive surprise’.

She added: “I was sat at home with my husband, got up and my waters broke.

“It was completely unexpected as the baby wasn’t due for another week, but she clearly couldn’t wait any longer.”

But it was not without complication, with Persia being born by emergency caesarean at 11.45am – following over 27 hours of labour.

Mother and baby have since returned home and are doing well.

Looking ahead, the jetsetting couple are already planning to take the tot with them to Grenada and are hopeful Persia follows in the family footsteps.

Darius said: “Now she’s finally here I can’t wait to watch her grow up.

“We’re both quite athletic and we can’t wait to see if she falls in love sports as well – maybe a little sprinter?”
