FIVE generations came together to celebrate their matriarch’s 106th birthday.
Gwen Newey was surrounded by family from her daughter to her great-great-granddaughter, to honour her special day at Chelmunds Court Care Home.
She said: “I’m so happy seeing my family for my birthday.”
Gwen was born in Alum Rock and lived there until she got married to Howard in October 1942.
The couple then moved to Solihull and lived with her sister when her brother-in-law joined the RAF.
When he returned Howard and Gwen moved back to Alum Rock into the house opposite the house where she was born.
Over the years Gwen worked sewing embroidery for badges for the forces and schools and football clubs Bryant and Tucker in Shirley.
She also worked in factory and made leather handbags for Lewis’s in Birmingham.
She retied when she was 72 from Bryant and Tuckers.
Gwen has a daughter named Margaret.
She also has two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Chelmund Court said: “The atmosphere throughout the day was emotional and joyous, with smiles, tears of happiness, and heartfelt stories shared among everyone present. The celebration was a beautiful reminder of the importance of family bonds and connection across generations.
“This occasion stands as a testament to Gwen’s remarkable life and the enduring power of family — a story of inspiration and connection cherished by all who were fortunate to be part of it.”
