First aider named High Sheriff cadet

Solihull Editorial 12th May, 2023   0

A FIRST aider with dreams of working in critical care medicine has been handed a top role.

Ishani Mistry has been appointed the High Sheriff’s Cadet for St John Ambulance and will complete duties with the High Sheriff alongside the Police cadets, as well as her usual voluntary work with St John Ambulance.

The Solihull Sixth Form College student was nominated for the position by her Youth Leaders.

She faced competition from other young people and had to undergo a presentation, interview, group activity and a first aid assessment before being appointed to the prestigious role.

Ishani has been volunteering with St John Ambulance since age 10 and is now Lead Cadet at her unit.

She said: “As a child I spent some time in hospital and that got me interested in the work that medical professionals do.

“I saw these professionals in green uniforms and I thought they looked really cool and then I started watching programmes on TV like Ambulance and Code Red and that got me interested in the work of critical care doctors and paramedics.

“I attend weekly St John Ambulance sessions and it’s like a family there. I’m active in the community, working as a first aider at cricket and football matches, volunteering on Friday night in Birmingham City Centre on Birmingham Night-time Economy and I have worked at Birmingham Pride too.

“I love the work and I have ambitions to become either a critical care paramedic or doctor, so it’s great experience for me.”
