Female students breaks the mould to chase dream of life in the fast lane

A FEMALE student is defying stereotypes and breaking barriers in the world of motor vehicle studies in a bid to fulfil her dream.

Hayaat Hussain is studying Light Vehicle Maintenance at Solihull College and University Centre’s Woodlands Campus.

The 17-year-old’s passion for all things automotive has deep roots in her family history and a desire to make her mark in the fast-paced world of Formula 1.

Hayaat comments: “I chose this course because I want to work at Formula 1 on the circuits.

“My grandad has an auto workshop, and I’ve been helping him out from a young age.

“The idea of becoming a race mechanic and working in the pits has always appealed to me.”

Last year, Hayaat got hands-on experience during a week-long work placement at Mercedes where she got a taste of life in the fast lane.

And this year, she continued her journey at Mercedes by shadowing a technician.

However, Hayaat’s journey is not just confined to the garage; she’s also making waves in a different setting.

After attending an all-girls school, her decision to pursue motor vehicle studies at college was a challenge she was determined to overcome.

She said: “Coming here was so different – I was the only girl in the class. Overtime, I gained confidence and formed friendships with my male peers.”

Alongside her studies, Hayaat serves as Woodlands Officer on the Student Executive Committee and is applying for the position of student voice president next year.

Her interest in these roles stems from a desire to have her voice heard, especially as the only girl in her class.

She says: “Being a representative gives me a voice, allowing me to share my perspectives and ideas.

“If your heart is set on something, go for it. People are going to talk no matter what. It’s your life, your goal. As long as you know the truth, that’s all that matters. Don’t let it bother you.”
