Fast broke at Solihull community Iftar

THE staff, students, parents and community representatives at Solihull Sixth Form College came together for Iftar.

The event was not not only an opportunity for those celebrating Ramadan to break their fast, it was also a chance for members of the college community of all faiths or no faith to come together and get a better awareness of Ramadan.

The Mayor of Solihull Coun Ken Meeson was in attendance, as well as visiting religious leaders from a range of faiths.

The event began with speeches in the college lecture theatre as students spoke out what Ramadan means to them.

A guest speaker from the Green Lane Mosque, Shaykh Mustafa, was also present to talk to the packed lecture theatre.

After the speeches, there was a chance for visitors to browse stalls for gifts, before the Call for Prayer and then food being served.

The food was provided by The Curry and Roti Bazaar.

Students from the Iftar Committee raised over £100 for fruit and Psychology teache Sanya Hussain donated five large cakes and an array of muffins and cookies.

Anisa Lokat-Fanning, associate assistant principal, said: “This was our first Community Iftar in College and it was a beautiful celebration for Ramadan and a great opportunity to demonstrate our multi-cultural community.

“Huge congratulations must go to the team in our Student Development Office, who worked incredibly hard, together with students from the Islamic Society, to organise such a brilliant event.”

Throughout the event, money was raised for Islamic Relief, with £399.35 raised which will fund many good causes in the UK and abroad.
