Families can enjoy a hearty meal this Christmas thanks to Hobs Moat community cafe

FAMILIES in need this festive season will be able to have a hearty meal thanks to Hobs Moat Community Cafe.

Hobs Moat Real Junk Food Project, based at St Mary’s Church hall, will be making festive hampers in a bid to ensure no-one goes hungry this Christmas.

The group, run by Donna Ball, had been hoping to host their usual Christmas party on December 24 – however due to Covid this is unlikely to go ahead.

Instead she and the team will be handing out hampers full of necessities, food and treats to last families over the festive period on Christmas Eve, December 24, from noon until 2pm.

For more than three years Hobs Moat Real Junk Food Project has been offering a hot meal and shopping to customers.

Donna teamed up with The Real Junk Food Project Brum and local supermarkets and offered goods on a pay as you feel basis.

She said: “We originally were going to close during the pandemic as we didn’t know if we’d be able to use the church hall or continue following the guidelines.

“I woke up on the first Thursday in lockdown and panicked thinking our regulars would be too scared to go to supermarkets.

“So, myself and my husband decided to go to the hall to pack some bags just in case.

“We had our usual flurry of customers so instantly realised we had to remain open.”

During the October half term, when families were not given any food vouchers for children in receipt of free school meals, they opened every weekday to offer pack lunches.

Looking to the future Donna said: “I’d like to be able to open back up again to serve hot food.

“Mostly though just to be able to continue to support as many people as possible is the most important thing.”
