A FORMER Engineering student is finishing his degree and on his way to becoming a teacher thanks to a prestigious bursary.
Louie O’Sullivan initially wanted to study business but decided to join his friends studying Engineering at Solihull College University College’s Woodlands Campus.
He said: “I felt a bit anxious about being in a class where I didn’t know anyone, so I followed my mates to Woodlands.
“It was such a big change from business, but it was the right move for me.”
Louie studied Aeronautical Engineering – which he thoroughly enjoyed – but he really wasn’t sure what he wanted to do next.
His personal tutor, Hayley Ridewood, suggested he go to university, but Louie wasn’t sure.
He said: “I didn’t think university was for someone like me. I couldn’t see how my family could afford it and thought it was out of reach, but then Hayley mentioned we could apply for a bursary.”
Louie did just that. The Lord Bhattacharyya Higher Educations Scholarships support eligible students from selected sixth forms, FE colleges and academies across the West Midlands as they progress from vocational qualifications to study degree-level engineering or related courses at any UK university.
Students from low-income households, and those who are under-represented in the engineering sector, are eligible for the opportunity to apply for a £15,000 scholarship to support their studies.
Louie is now forging the next steps in his career plan in his final year and is now even helping to teach students.
He has confidence and is loving it so much he is continuing his studies to become a secondary school teacher, after applying for his PGCE.
Hayley said: “It was truly a privilege to work with him and witness his personal and academic growth. Louie has an amazing future ahead, and I am both proud and honoured to have played a part in his journey.”
