Elderly couple call for road improvements describing path as "an accident waiting to happen"

A PAIR of elderly residents are calling for changes to be made to their pavement in Hall Green after being forced to walk on the road due to the uneven surface.

Mary and Matthew Dolan, who have lived in the borough for more than 50 years, believe the current conditions of the pavement are dangerous and an accident is waiting to happen – despite maintenance to the path in recent months.

Currently, Amey holds the contract for road repairs in the West Midlands – including on Peverell Drive where Mr and Mrs Dolan live.

A petition with the signature of 40 locals was sent to Birmingham City Council – informing them on the conditions of the road and pavement.

Two representatives from Amey inspected the road, concluding that the road was no worse than any other street in the borough.

Local MP, Roger Godsiff, disagreed and believes something must be done to prevent injury in the future.

Mrs Dolan told The Observer: “I broke my wrist three years ago and the road is still no different.

“Myself and my husband have to walk on the road as the condition of the pavement is so poor – slabs are raised and it’s a tripping hazard.

“The road needs to be resurfaced or else injury is just around the corner – particularly amongst the older residents.”
