EDITOR'S COMMENT: Have your say on councillors' extreme immigration re-tweets

Editor’s comment from this week’s Solihull Observer

Many of our readers will view the promotion of extreme views on Twitter by Solihull councillors Margaret Bassett and Jeff Potts as shocking and dangerous.

News that the police are investigating Coun Potts’ social media actions is equally troubling.

There is a fine balance to be struck between protecting freedom of expression, and people with different races and religions from being the victims of racial hatred.

Abhorrent as the views promoted are, the race hate laws are hard to prosecute. Motive and intent to stir up race hatred has to be established.

Both councillors now potentially face sanctions from the Conservatives and Solihull council.

If they ever have their names on ballot papers again, residents will have their say.
