EDITOR'S COMMENT: Brexit mess was entirely predictable

Les Reid 15th Jul, 2018   0

Putting aside the many false arguments on both sides of the Brexit debate, my view is that the referendum vote was fundamentally about ‘sovereignty’ and democracy – a theoretical and reasonable idea about whether power might be held to account more and brought closer to people.

In voting on the simple question of the UK remaining or leaving the EU, many voters at the ballot box would not have had a polarised or categorical view that one course of action must be taken at any expense.

It’s therefore unsurprising that both the country and politicians are utterly divided on how to proceed – and on what the details should look like.

Throw in the inevitable political agendas and politicians’ ambitions and it was always going to be messy.
