Dementia choir singing for joy as sessions double

A CHOIR for dementia patients and their carers has been singing for joy as it has doubled the number of meetings.

Solihull Memory Singers now meets weekly on Thursdays at The Onward Club in Chelmsley Wood, thanks to funding from the Heart of England Community Foundation.

The group is open to anyone with dementia or other neurological condition, and their carers.

It helps people with the conditions enjoy the well-known therapeutic, social and cognitive benefits of music as well as offering a valuable opportunity to connect with loved ones through singing.

Solihull is one of three Memory Singers groups run by the Warwick-based choir and music charity Armonico Consort whose professional musicians have been specially trained in partnership with The Alzheimer’s Society’s Singing for the Brain initiative.

A workshop leader and pianist take participants through fun and friendly sessions featuring a wide range of music.

Sarah Riddell, operations manager at Armonico Consort said: “There’s now a wealth of scientific research to prove the benefits of singing, but all of this is entirely self-evident when you witness a Memory Singers session.

“It’s a joy to see connections re-open through music and for many people this is the highlight of their week.

“We’re very grateful to the many trusts and foundations, as well as the Heart of England Community Foundation, who support the Memory Singers.”

As well as being keen to hear from potential participants, Armonico are also on the lookout for volunteers to lend a hand during the sessions.

Solihull Memory Singers takes place from 1pm until 2.30pm on Thursdays.
