A DEDICATED volunteer who has given up over 1,000 hours of his time over the past decade for a local mental health charity is preparing to go an extra mile at the London Marathon.
Paul Stokes, a volunteer with Coventry, Warwickshire and Worcestershire Mind, is preparing to take on the London Marathon on April 27.
For Paul, who works for Rugby building contractor Stepnell, it is more than just a personal challenge – it is a way of giving back to the charity which has played a huge role in his life over the past ten years.
He said: “Ten years ago, I was in hospital and spent weeks between there and my GP surgery. I had made that call everyone should make when they need help, but my family were met with many closed doors and sent down numerous blind alleys over the following week.
“I had struggled with low self-esteem since childhood, which later developed into depression and a complete lack of self-worth. Fortunately, I had the support of my family and friends to help me through those difficult months.”
Determined to rebuild his confidence, Paul worked with his GP, counsellor, and family – leading him to volunteer with Coventry and Warwickshire Mind, as it was then known.
Initially, he joined the Befriending Service, meeting people one-on-one in the community as a friendly, supportive ear. Later, he became involved with the Intensive Recovery Support Service, where he continues to run a weekly social evening for residents. And during the pandemic, he volunteered by speaking to isolated clients over the phone.
Now, having applied unsuccessfully for 12 years, he has secured a place in the London Marathon 2025 – and is thrilled to finally take on this challenge and raise vital funds for a cause so close to his heart.
He said: “I have seen first hand the incredible work the staff do to support those accessing their services. I often meet clients during their first week, and whether they stay for two weeks or two years, they often leave as changed individuals.
“The dedication of the staff, in particular, has been truly inspiring. Many former clients still meet up or occasionally attend my social evening, which is a testament to the charity’s lasting impact.”
Funds raised from Paul’s marathon effort will go directly to supporting those in need. The charity is currently working on developing a therapeutic lodge at its Harry Salt House site in Coventry, which will provide a tranquil setting for recovery activities.
Paul added: “To finally have the chance to run the London Marathon feels like the perfect way to celebrate everything that Coventry, Warwickshire and Worcestershire Mind stands for and to ensure their life-changing work continues.
“Every mile I run is for those who are still fighting, those who have found their strength, and those who need to know they are not alone.”
Steven Hill, CEO of Coventry, Warwickshire and Worcestershire Mind, said all at the charity were incredibly grateful to Paul for his support over the last ten years.
He added: “His commitment to our charity and the people we support is truly inspiring, and to see him take on the London Marathon in aid of the charity is a testament to his passion for mental health.
“Every step he takes will help us continue providing vital services for those in need, and we couldn’t be prouder to have him representing us on this journey.”
