Creative pupils make garland of bunting for King's coronation

Solihull Editorial 2nd May, 2023   0

CREATIVE Solihull pupils have been getting the bunting ready to celebrate the King’s coronation.

Across the borough youngsters from Cockshut Hill School, Ninestiles, Lyndon School and Solihull Sixth Form College have been sewing and glueing pieces alongside the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham.

In keeping with the King’s sustainable ambitions, the project followed a ‘make do and mend’ theme, with only biodegradable, found and donated materials used.

The bunting will be displayed at Centenary Square during the Coronation celebrations, and some selected banners and bunting will also be shown at the Ikon Gallery in the city.

The project was set up by the West Midlands Lieutenancy to encourage children and young people across the region to get involved in the Coronation celebrations.

Zoe Maksymiw, curriculum leader of creative arts at Solihull Sixth Form College, said: “Our learners have really enjoyed being involved in the King’s Bunting project.

“Many of them did not know about the ‘mend and make do’ mentality that prevailed after the war and this has been a great way for them to learn more about how we can re-use and recycle materials to make something which is both smart and sustainable.

“The bunting looks fantastic and we cannot wait for it to be displayed for the Coronation celebrations.”
