Countdown under way to this year's Shirley Carnival

Solihull Editorial 2nd Jul, 2023   0

THIS year’s Shirley Lions Carnival takes place on Saturday, July 8.

The event at Shirley Park offers plenty of summer fun for all the family, including performances from comedy act Maynard Filp Flap, the Jet Dance Academy and the Shirley Pipe Band.

Old favourites such as the Central Legion, Punch and Judy will also be back.

For youngsters, there will be the Magic Maze, the Birmingham Bumper Balls and children’s rides.

New for 2023 is a fun dog show which boasts six categories – waggiest tail, oldest dog, junior handler, best six legs, carnival king and carnival queen. Entry for this is just £1 with various prizes up for grabs, so all dog owners are encouraged to come along and take part.

Carnival chairman, Ken Barker, said: “Over the 40 years, the Lions have been organising the carnival it’s become an increasingly important event on the community’s calendar and the Lions are always looking for new attractions to appear at the carnival together with some traditional favourites.”

The carnival always has two objectives – to provide a fun filled day for all the family and also to raise cash for charity.

This year’s proceeds will go towards Brain Tumour Research as well as the Lions’ own charities.

Ken added: “It is hoped the Shirley community will turn up in their thousands to support these worthwhile causes.”

The fun starts at 12pm. Admission, as with all other local carnivals, will be £3 for indiviuals or £10 for a family group.
