Council plans new blueprint for adult day care and support

Solihull Editorial 14th Jul, 2022   0

COUNCIL chiefs will discuss a new five-year strategy and blueprint for adult day opportunities at a meeting next week.

Members of Solihull Council’s Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Board will discuss the new plans on Monday (July 18).

Day opportunities can help people with care and support needs to develop new skills, prepare for or find a job, meet with and make friends, and sometimes also be supported while their carers have a break.

Coun Tony Dicicco, cabinet member for Adult Social Care and Health, revealed why the new strategy is needed.

“In Solihull we want people to have good quality day opportunities whether they are provided by the council or one of our partner organisations,” he said.

“We want to build on individual strengths to support people to do what they enjoy and be part of their local community.

“Opportunities should be on offer at different times, including evening and weekend activities and provide the reassurance of support which enables carers to have a break.

Coun Dicicco continued: “To develop this strategy we have spoken to people currently accessing day opportunities in Solihull, providers of day opportunities and people who do not currently access services but might want to.

“The strategy sets out the kinds of day opportunities people need and want to access, and the Council’s vision for how we deliver against those aspirations.

“Solihull needs a range of providers and choices to support people to meet their individual goals. I look forward to hearing the views of our scrutiny board next week.”

As part of the strategy, the council will be raising awareness of the day services which are already available, and working with care providers and community organisations to develop more flexible day opportunities.

These will be available from 2023.
