OPENING night at The Core has been pushed back as works continue on the roof.
The main auditorium is now set to see the return of singers, dancers and actors to the stage in May as remediation works to the roof as well as additional improvements to stage equipment go on.
Last month Solihull Council said plans were ‘on track’ for the theatre to welcome audiences back in April with a full programme being drawn up.
However, that has changed to due ‘one or two snags’.
Councillor Wazma Qais, cabinet member for Communities, said: “Our last update on The Core Theatre in mid-December explained that the remediation works to the auditorium roof were progressing, with the aim of an end of April 2025 opening.
“The work is going well, but as with any older building there are always one or two snags. We are therefore now looking to reopen the auditorium at the beginning of May 2025, with a celebratory variety performance hosted by the Mayor of Solihull for her charity fundraising event.
“This revised timetable will enable contractors to fully complete the roof remediation and undertake the additional upgrades required to the stage.”
There were two performances were scheduled to take place in the auditorium at the end of April.
Coun Qais said the council is exploring alternative arrangements with these performers and audience members will be contacted directly when more information is available.
The calendar for the remainder of the year includes top tribute acts, musicals, film, comedy and productions from local theatre societies.
In September 2022 Solihull Council was forced to close The Core’s doors after reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), which is prone to collapse, was identified at the theatre following a routine inspection last year.
Further investigations at the auditorium and stage roof indicated further work needed to take place before the venue could reopen.
Several of the shows, including the borough’s much-loved pantomime, were moved to The Artrix in Bromsgrove.
The rest of The Core building has been open throughout and a programme of shows, events and activities will continue to be hosted in the Studio theatre, Courtyard Gallery, Encore Café Bar, Core Creatives, Solihull Connect and The Core Library.
