Coppice Junior School seeks former students to join 80th anniversary celebrations

MEMORIES and first-hand experiences from all 80 years of Coppice Junior School are being sought for the school’s 80th anniversary this summer.

To celebrate the oak anniversary organisers are calling for memories, photos and memorabilia of teachers, pupils, school plays and other events to share at a celebration being held on September 29.

They are also searching for the oldest surviving boy or girl of the school as well as pupils from each of the years gone by to share their stories.

The Coppice Road school, Elmdon Heath Council Infants School Damson Lane as it was known then, opened its doors for the first time on August 30 1937 with just over 90 children – some of which had been loaned to the school for the first year – and three teachers including head Rose Sterry.

The early years of the school were dominated by the Second World War, although the school log book often shows more concern for inadequate heating than the frequent air raid warnings and gas mask practices.

John Botten, a former history teacher on the governing board, said: “We would like to find someone who remembers the earliest decades of the school.

“The first pupils to attend the school will be in their late eighties now, so we hope that some will come forward to help us to tell today’s pupils what it was like then.”

“It would be great to be able to build the story of the school over the years to share with the children and with the wider community.

“There must be a good many adults who attended the school over the years and we would love to hear from them.”
