Top Tips:

If you’re not lucky enough to win the Forest of Arden leisure membership competition, you can still focus on your fitness with small lifestyle changes.

Here Matthew Hurcombe, a personal trainer at the four star property, shares his top tips to help make 2016 the year you reach your fitness goals.

What are your top three tips for a healthy lifestyle?

1. Quality over quantity – focus on good intense workouts, that will make a real difference.

2. Ditch the quick fixes – make sure whatever lifestyle changes you make, you can stick with them.

3. Enjoy it – getting fit should be an ongoing lifestyle and you’re unlikely to stick to it if you don’t enjoy it.

What is more important – diet or exercise?

Without a doubt – diet. As the old saying goes, you can’t out train a bad diet! The right exercise will supplement the right diet to achieve results.

Lots of people fall into the trap of thinking they can eat what they want if they go to the gym regularly.

You need to eat a healthy balanced diet, plenty of protein, fresh fruit and vegetables.

What advice do you have for someone who doesn’t have time to go to the gym regularly?

It is important to make your health a priority, so if you don’t have time for regular gym sessions, make sure the ones you go to count. Don’t do things that you’re already good at, challenge your body every time you make it to the gym – this is the only way you’ll start seeing results.

Many people don’t enjoy exercise – what is your advice for them?

They’re doing the wrong type of exercise, so try something different. If you’ve been going to the gym why not look into taking up a sport or getting a group of friends together for a run or a kick about – it all counts.

And finally, what food should people avoid?

Sugary drinks – drinking your calories will never end well.
