Community wardrobe welcomes all to look the part and reduce clothes waste

A COMMUNITY wardrobe welcomed more than 30 people at its first event in North Solihull.

Uplift Initiative CIC saw 37 people walk through the doors at its first event at the Evergreen Family Hub in Kingshurst, at the event where clothes are handed out or exchanged to help with the cost of living crisis.

The community wardrobe offer free adult and children’s clothing, a small clothing repair and mending workshop, toys and a small play area for children as well as tea, coffee, and light refreshments.

There is no criteria, no referrals, and no pre-booking.

Tammy Pickett, from The Uplift Initiative CIC, said: “The community wardrobe was created after seeing how many people were struggling to afford everyday essentials, including clothing.

“At the same time, there’s so much good clothing going to waste this project brings those two issues together in a positive, practical way.

“The Uplift Initiative supports individuals and families facing financial difficulty or life changes. It’s open, inclusive and non-judgemental, people don’t need to prove need, just access support.

“The Community clothing wardrobe is part of that wider mission helping people feel confident, supported and able to move forward.”

The project is run by Tammy and a group of ad-hoc volunteers who help with sorting, organising and welcoming people into the space.

When someone arrives at the event they are welcomed in and can look around the clothes like they would in a shop.

“There’s no pressure and no paperwork. Support is on hand if needed, and people can take what’s right for them”, Tammy said “Donations are welcome on the day but are never expected or required.”

The project, which is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and Kingshurst Together, will open its doors once again at the Riverside Hub in Chelmsley Wood on February 10 at 10am.

Future events will be announced on Uplift Initiative CIC’s social media pages.
