Community Streetwatch join Birmingham Airport police patrols

Solihull Editorial 1st Nov, 2022   0

A WEST Midlands Police Streetwatch scheme where members of the community come together has ‘landed’ at Birmingham Airport.

The force say the initiative is a first of its kind at any UK airport which will see the group of volunteers work alongside the airport policing team to help keep the airport and those visiting it safe.

The initiative launched at the airport on October 11 and is made up of community members of all ages, with some being avid airport enthusiasts.

Passengers and visitors to the airport might see the group who will undertake regular walkabouts in public access areas.

Birmingham Airport Streetwatch member Gordon Stretch, said: “I have been visiting the airport for over 50 years as a local enthusiast and really wanted to get involved in this great initiative.

“Birmingham Airport Streetwatch is a great way of using the observation skills of local aviation enthusiasts (and local residents) to help keep the airport safe and secure.

“We have always had a good relationship with the airport policing team and this is logical development of that.”

Inspector Colin Gallier from Birmingham Airport Police, said: “It’s great to see enthusiastic members of the community coming together and giving up their own time to keep our airport safe.

“Having extra eyes and ears to help us keep everyone safe is another great tactic that also helps us prevent crime. It sends a strong message out to potential criminals that they are not welcome at our airport.”
