FESTIVE revellers are being urged to make responsible choices and plan a safe ride home as West Midlands Police launch its Christmas drink drive campaign.
Police chiefs are determined to drive down the number of people killed or seriously injured on the region’s roads.
The force will be ramping up efforts to keep the roads safe this Christmas and will see officer out in force conducting roadside checks and targeting those who choose to drive under the influence.
The Fatal Four – speeding, drink driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and using a phone while driving – are the main causes of serious collisions on the roads.
A crackdown on the Fatal Four offences saw more than 2,000 drivers targeted in the first six months of the year.
A total of 1,252 were arrested for driving while under the influence of drink or drugs in the first six months of this year, with 478 motorists caught speeding, 144 caught without wearing a seatbelt, and 344 caught using mobile phone.
Anyone caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, could face serious consequences, including a prison sentence, a hefty fine, and a driving ban. It can also affect jobs, relationships, and future opportunities.
Gareth Mason, head of the force’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “The festive season should be a time of joy and celebration, not tragedy. Yet, year after year, we see lives shattered by the reckless actions of drink and drug drivers.
“As we approach Christmas, we’re sending a strong warning: do not risk it. Our officers will be out in force, targeting those who endanger lives. If you’re caught, you will face the full force of the law.
“We won’t tolerate drink or drug driving. It’s selfish, dangerous, and could have devastating consequences – families torn apart, futures ruined and communities scarred.
“If you’re planning a night out, please plan your journey home in advance. Book a taxi, use public transport, or designate a sober driver. By doing so, you could save a life – including your own.”
