Chemistry student handed award for dedication to subject

A CHEMISTRY student at Solihull Sixth Form College has been handed a top award for her dedication to the subject.

Rawan Yusuf is in her final year of A level study has been recognised for her achievements in the subject this term, after being chosen by teachers to receive the John Sleigh Award.

Assistant curriculum leader Hilary Woodward said at first the 18-year-old found A Level Chemistry challenge but with great determination she has managed to achieve A* grades in the science.

Rawan said: “I chose A level Chemistry because it was my favourite subject at school; besides opening a lot of doors for the future. Since studying it at College, I have enjoyed facing the challenges, as it has given me the opportunity to become more independent. Although I am not going to pursue Chemistry in the future, I have gained many personal skills which I can transfer to other aspects of my life.”




The John Sleigh Award was set up in memory of a former chemistry teacher at the college.

It recognises and rewards effort and improvement and takes into account progress from GCSE through to A level.
