A LITTLE tipple now and again is part of the secret to a healthy happy life – according to a 104-year-old Shirley care home resident.

Lily Watts celebrated her special birthday listening to her favourite music surrounded by her family and friends while reminiscing about wonderful memories from different chapters of her life with a glass of sherry.

Lily was born and raised in Birmingham, where she met her late husband Jack in late 1937 who had been a prisoner of war for five years.

The pair went on to have two children, John and Joy and she also has five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Her first job was a shop assistant, followed by a position at Morris Commercial automotive which was converted during the war to support the Army’s trucks.

Lily spent most of her life as a dinner lady.

Since her retirement, Lily’s hobbies have included sewing and knitting, which she continues to enjoy at The Priory Care Home in Shirley.

Lily said: “My secret is to work hard and enjoy a good lifestyle – and a little tipple now and again.

“I really enjoyed my birthday, it was really special to have the family come and celebrate. We ate some lovely treats and opened lots of presents.”

Katie McCauley, home manager at The Priory, added: “It was brilliant to celebrate Lily’s birthday with her, she is a truly special resident who is well loved in the home.

“It was great that all the residents got involved and helped out making her card.”
