STAYING active and going roller skating is the secret to finding love and having a long life – according to a 106-year-old Silhillian.

Jack Roberts celebrated his landmark birthday with a glass of bubbly and a slice of cake at a surprise party with his wife Iris organised by the staff at Sunrise of Solihull care home.

He even received a birthday card from the Queen.

The grew up in Ward End before moving to Hall Green, Shirley, Kings Heath and he moved into Worcester Way care home last July.

Jack met Iris while roller-skating and it wasn’t long until he popped the question and the couple got married on September 8 1945.

They have one daughter, Jean, who lives in Spain and visits her parents who both live at Sunrise of Solihull.

He worked in the region’s ever-growing car industry.

Over the years he has enjoyed horse riding, rollerblading and ice-skating for many years and became an ice-skating judge.

He and Iris were also keen walkers, competed in ballroom and Latin American dancing competitions and played golf.

Jo Hopkins, director of community relations, said: “Jack and Iris have been valued members of our community since July 2018 and we feel very lucky to share such a wonderful occasion with them.

“It was lovely to surprise Jack with our celebrations and we look forward to seeing him continue to enjoy life at Sunrise of Solihull.”
