Cancer survivor Joyce asks the questions in quiz for Macmillan

Solihull Editorial 5th Dec, 2020   0

COVID-19 has had a major impact on the ability of charities to fundraise in 2020, but it hasn’t stopped a local cancer survivor whose popular annual fundraising quiz is on course to smash her £200,000 target.

Joyce Rothschild, from Solihull, first started raising money through her annual quiz while recovering from chemotherapy for breast cancer.

“I had to have additional surgery because at time there wasn’t a specific piece of equipment which would have enabled the surgeon to identify the level of spread without removing my lymph nodes,” said Joyce.

“I wanted to make things easier for women who came after me, so raising money for this equipment seemed like a good idea.”

For the first three years, the quiz raised money for the Cancer Centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and over the last 20, Joyce has chosen to back Macmillan Cancer Support.

Over the last 24 years, Joyce has raised more than £183,000 for charity, most of which has gone to Macmillan. Last year alone, the quiz raised £16,800.

The quiz itself is distributed to over 2,000 people and has entries from around the world.

“Given the quiz is enjoyed by people from all around the country, (and from many countries abroad), I wanted to pick a charity that had a national reach.

“I admire Macmillan’s work and not only the clinical support they provide but the emotional and practical support they provide for people living with cancer too.”

Macmillan Cancer Support, like so many charities, has been hugely affected by the cancellation of thousands of fundraising events due to Covid-19 and is facing a shortfall of up to £80million in income this year as a result of the virus.

Fundraising manager Jayna Kawa said: “Support from the public has never been so vital.

“As a charity that is almost entirely funded by public donations, and currently facing an approximate £80m drop in income.

“That is why we are so grateful to Joyce and her friend Yasmi for working hard to make sure this important annual fundraiser, which is a Christmas tradition for many, goes ahead and helps us raise the money we need to continue supporting people living with cancer – now and in the future.”

Every year the quiz has a different theme – with this year’s being ‘words ending in four out of the five vowels’, so the clue would be ‘a typical Mexican hat’ and the answer would be ‘a sombrero’.

There are prizes galore on offer too. To find out more or to get involved, email [email protected] or visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/joycesquiz2020. The event closes on January 6.
