Call for more speed checks on Solihull's roads

SILHILLIANS are being called on the highlight speeding hotspots in a petition.

Councillor Heather Delaney, for Meriden, is asking residents to point out roads that are a concern in her petition that calls on West Midlands Police to increase the frequency of speed checks and mobile enforcement units in known problem areas across the borough.

The petition calls on the force to work with ward and parish councillors, as well as community groups to address residents’ concerns.

The Conservative Councillor said: “Other than planning and the NHS, speeding is one of the most common reasons residents contact me, and as such I wanted to do something about this.

“In Solihull we have a really good record on road safety, however we know that in Meriden ward, and indeed across the whole of Solihull, there are roads where speeding is a real issue and is something that residents are concerned about.”

In 2024, there were 312 collisions with some injury reported across Solihull.

The petition says: “Solihull has one of the best road safety records in the country, but we know that roads where excessive speeding takes place remains a serious concern in our community, endangering pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.

“Our youngsters and elderly residents are amongst the most vulnerable people, and they must be protected.

“Excessive speed is the major cause of road traffic collisions and reduced speeds of vehicles mean that injury, even death, can be reduced when vehicles impact with pedestrians.

“Some of these injuries are life changing and we must strive to reduce them as much as possible.

“Solihull Council, in partnership with Solihull Police and West Midland Fire Service work to address borough road safety concerns through the Solihull Road Safety Partnership Board.

“However, despite clear signage and existing speed restrictions, many roads in Solihull continue to see regular breaches of the legal limits.

“By working with communities and Solihull Council to identify high-risk locations, we can make Solihull’s roads safer for everyone.”

In recent months West Midlands Police have teamed up with speedwatch groups across the borough to tackle speeding drivers.

The speedwatch groups are often run by volunteers in the community.
