Budding journalists land top award

Solihull Editorial 30th Jun, 2024   0

A PAIR of budding investigative journalists have been handed a top award.

Solihull Sixth Form College English students Eleanor Reilly and Charlotte Brant won first and second prize respectively in the Cooper Prize for Journalism competition.

The competition is held in memory of a former member of the English department Chris Cooper, who passed away in March 2022.

Eleanor Reilly was named the winner for her piece of journalism entitled ‘Suffering in Silence’. Eleanor wrote a powerful piece about the normalised and ingrained culture of abuse in junior gymnastics, using her own experiences as a coach to produce a polished piece of investigative journalism.

Meanwhile, the runner up was Charlotte Brant, whose article was called ‘Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus: the Martian Advantage’. The judges were impressed with this punchy and thought-provoking article that explored modern day sexism and myths about feminism.

Jane McCard, curriculum leader for English and Modern Languages at the College, said: “Congratulations to Eleanor and Charlotte for their outstanding journalistic articles. It was difficult to pick two students to win these prizes, but both learners tackled very interesting subject matter in an interesting and insightful way.”

The Cooper Prize for Journalism is open to A level English Language and English Literature students, and members of the Creative Writing enrichment course.
